You may have some of these but here are other things you may want to consider as you go along:
#Orion skyseeker upgrade#
I know I'll want/need to upgrade lenses at some point, but I think this will be great for getting my feet wet and for helping me discover all the things I don't even know that I don't know. Well, I think for a starter package in my budget, I've decided on the XT10 PLUS. Your primary commitments are what matter most. And despite the best advice here, as the ole saying goes, "know thy self" when it comes to your wallet. And I say that last comment kindly CN is a great resource. Just about any topic with this hobby has been discussed "Ad nauseam (endlessly)". Goes on sale periodically.ĬN is a great resource for advice or searching for info.

Certainly enough object information to last a long while without purchasing the PRO version.

Personally, I found the SkySafari Plus software on a tablet to be a great help plus manual GOTO with my 10". Nothing wrong in using any type of computer assistance to finding objects to utilize your time as you learn the night sky. Lastly, I found my time to enjoy this hobby was limited with long work hours and family commitments. Especially eyepieces!! Trust me that bucket can suck up more dollars than your scope. You might want to consider doing the same excercise to checkout accessories folks use. As you went to a star party to check things out. That's where putting on the brakes helps.

Second, it's quite easy to go "beyond your budget". The easier your scope is to setup and/or transport the more you'll use it. A 10" will certainly keep you busy for a life time. I understand the initial excitement (we've all been there) but put on the mental brakes periodically to enjoy the hobby. Take the time needed to make the best decision for yourself. If you have two specific scope packages that you want to compare, start a thread specific to those and the owners will jump in and those with strong opinions will jump in too.Įdited by aeajr, 26 September 2017 - 09:29 AM.

I have not seen anything like this from any of the other companies. The Intelliscope is a uniquely Orion thing. I don't think you will go wrong with either one. I see their products at all the outrach and club events. Orion seems to have a stronger presence in the USA, but that is just my observation, not fact. I don't know about Sky-watcher's reputation. Orion has an excellent reputation around supporting their customers. I think they are distributors/retailers so it is a matter of how they package the products, how they price them and how they support them. I don't think either company is a manufacturer. Overview on the 16" Sky-watcher Synscan - 5 years old so I don't know if it is current What would work better for you, in your situation? Anything over 10" I would want to go to a collapsible or a truss if I planned to transport it in my car. However, to me it is all about packaging. I don't know that I have ever seen a Sky-watcher in person at an observing event. I know the Orion line much better than the Sky-watcher line. I guess the goto would be similar but I don't know for sure. I think they are both made by Synta so the optics should be the same. The Orion SkySeeker IV mounts work this way too.Įdited by aeajr, 25 September 2017 - 06:08 PM. Video - Around 4:20 he gets into what you want.

This is not a GoTo mount, it is a tracking mount.įor full size dobs, what they do is similar to what you requested but no Intelliscope pointer. What you describe sounds a lot like the SW Virtuoso or the Orion Autotracker but not quite. If that's the case, I may have to get one and sell of my Z10 I just got. So are there in fact GOTO dobs that allow the push-to with audible feedback like the intelliscope models, but allow you to engage tracking once you get there? That would be my ideal dob design (trying to put any and all thoughts of an EQ platform out of my head). Note that some GoTo systems will not let you do this, others will, should you decide to go the GoTo route. I use it when I want and I leave it turned off when I don't need it.

I don't use my car's GPS to go to the grocery store, I know how to get there. I am also learning other methods for finding targets.I don't need the computer to find the moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Mars, the Orion Nebula, and.BTW, I use my XT8i manually, without the computer, about 50% of the time.
